The new coronavirus infection is spreading in all parts of the world. When you hear in the news that the number of infected people and the number of deaths are increasing every day, you may be scared. Washing hands and wearing a mask are a couple of the things you can do to prevent infection. Keep washing your hands. Washing your hands multiple times, a day with soap and water is still a primary way to prevent the spread of germs. Not only does it help prevent the spread of COVID-19, it also helps prevent the spread of the common cold and other diseases.

Wear a cloth mask over your nose and mouth in public. This protects other people from you, should you be contagious. The masks other people wear protect you from them, should they be contagious. The virus can travel in small droplets of moisture that are expelled from your mouth and nose when you sneeze, cough or talk. Wearing a cloth mask, scarf or bandanna over your nose and mouth prevents those droplets from hitting other people or on surfaces others may touch. (Be sure to wash the cloth covering after each use.) This only works if everyone helps protect each other.

In the case of the new coronavirus, the possibility of airborne infection is low, and “splash infection” and “contact infection” are considered to be the main routes of transmission. The basis of infection prevention is to cut off the route of transmission. In other words, droplet infection and contact infection are the main routes of transmission. Basically, avoiding droplets containing viruses, avoiding contact with infected people, and not touching those with the virus attached are the basics of prevention. But you don’t know if the virus is attached. The doorknobs used by an unspecified number of people, the straps on trains, etc., may have viruses attached to them. And there is a possibility that the virus also attaches to your own hands when you touch them. That’s why it’s important to wash your hands when you return home, before eating, or before cooking.

Masks are said to be highly effective in preventing the virus contained in the droplets from spreading around due to coughing and sneezing. In other words, prevention of the spread of infection is more important than prevention of infection. However, in places that are crowded, droplets containing viruses may spread. Therefore, wearing a mask also helps prevent infection in crowds.

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol, covering all surfaces of your hands and rubbing them together until they feel dry.

The following actions help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces every day.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
