Since the December outbreak in Wuhan, China, the new coronavirus has spread rapidly in all parts to world. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus that causes the disease known as COVID-19 seems to be spreading in the community in certain affected geographic areas. As with any virus, however, there are simple steps you can take to protect yourself.

1) Wash your hands frequently and carefully. Use warm water and soap and rub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Work the lather to your wrists, between your fingers, and under your fingernails. You can also use an antibacterial and antiviral soap. Use hand sanitizer when you cannot wash your hands properly. Rewash your hands several times a day, especially after touching anything, including your phone or laptop.

2) Stay home. The CDC, the WHO, governments and healthcare workers are all urging people to stay home if they can. Obviously, some people don't have the luxury of working from home, and people still need to venture out to grocery stores and gas stations. But when you can stay home, do so to flatten the curve.  If you do need to leave the house, follow some basic preventative measures.

3) Wear a mask. It's best to wear a mask, especially when you are in a public place. This is especially encouraged in situations where social distancing is difficult to maintain (such as in a grocery store or pharmacy) and in areas of significant community-based transmission. All types of viruses can be easily transmitted from one person to another when they cough and sneeze (saliva droplets). Thus, it's best to wear a mask and save yourself and others too.

4) Try to avoid touching your face. Touching the hands of other people isn’t the only hand-related practice to lessen: you should try to avoid touching your face with your own hands too! It’s possible for droplets to be transferred via hand-to-hand contact. For that reason, it’s a good idea to avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. If droplets containing the virus made their way onto your hands, touching your eyes, nose, or mouth would be the primary way to transfer those droplets into your own body.

5) Avoid eating or drinking in public places. Now is not the time to go out to eat. This means avoiding restaurants, coffee shops, bars, and other eateries. The virus can be transmitted through food, utensils, dishes, and cups. It may also be temporarily airborne from other people in the venue. You can still get delivery or takeaway food. Choose foods that are thoroughly cooked and can be reheated. This means it may be best to avoid cold foods from restaurants and all food from buffets and open salad bars.

Basic Preventive Measures

These preventive tips can be used in numerous ways to prevent the spread of the virus. These preventive tips include:

  • Regularly washing hands with alcohol-based sanitizers and soap.
  • Cover mouth and nose with elbow or tissues when coughing or sneezing.
  • Avoid close contact with anyone with flu, cough and cold symptoms.
  • Regularly clean phones, light switches, taps and doorknobs with disinfectants.
  • Consult a doctor if you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing.
